Living Lighter: Letting Go of the Physical and Emotional Clutter That Weighs Us Down

I started my business, Essential Spaces Organizing, because I felt God calling me to something different.

He placed a dream inside my heart, but I ignored it for years out of fear and, honestly, a lack of trust.

I had been in education for 20 years—my first three years as a classroom teacher and then 17 years as an elementary school counselor. It was really all I had known. The life of an educator had been my entire adult career.

This past spring, I resigned.

It's something I felt God telling me to do for five years.

I waited. I put it off. I couldn't see myself starting a business. I knew nothing about entrepreneurship or even where to start.

But slowly, the fruit of disobedience started to get louder and heavier until I couldn't ignore God any longer. I was tired. The pace of working full-time and trying to be the best mom I could be was wearing me out. I felt like the things that mattered most to me were constantly being put on the back burner; time with God, my family and kids, my health were all taking a backseat because I couldn't manage it all.

After many sleepless nights, lots of tears, and thoughtful conversations with my husband, we decided I needed to take the leap into the unknown.

To say I was terrified would be an astronomical understatement.

I had no idea how I was going to do this.

I knew this journey of becoming an entrepreneur was going to stretch me, but I had no idea how much.

God is teaching me so much in this season of life about what it truly means to keep Him first, to fully trust Him, and to surrender every single area of my life to Him—no matter how uncomfortable it may be.

What I didn't realize was how many survival patterns from childhood were still running the show.

Fear.

Insecurity.

Unworthiness.

Control.

Self-reliance.

God has been showing me these things, not to shame me, but to lovingly invite me to lay them down, get out of my own way, and humble myself enough to trust Him and let Him lead.

And here's the ironic part.

My mission with Essential Spaces Organizing is to help women lay down the weights that hinder them from running the beautiful race God has for them.

What I didn't quite realize was how much of my own weight I was still carrying.

So I'm on a journey to walk the walk and do the work.

And that's really why I'm writing this blog.

It's about more than organizing your home.

Yes, I'm a professional organizer.

I love decluttering and organizing. There is something deeply satisfying about the process of sorting through what you've accumulated, letting go of what you no longer need, and creating a space that feels peaceful, functional, and intentional.

I've seen how powerful that can be.

When we declutter our homes, something often happens inside of us, too.

We breathe a little deeper.

We feel a little lighter.

We have more clarity.

We begin to notice what really matters.

And that creates a domino effect.

We start craving more simplicity—not just in our homes, but in our schedules, our commitments, our relationships, our habits, and the way we spend our time, energy, and attention.

That's where this blog comes in.

I want to talk about the internal clutter, too.

The fear.

The insecurity.

The perfectionism.

The people-pleasing.

The need for control.

The constant busyness.

The emotional weight we've carried for years.

The things we believe about ourselves that aren't true.

The commitments we've said yes to because we didn't know how to say no.

The distractions that keep us from what matters most.

Because sometimes the mess isn't just in our closets.

Sometimes the heaviest clutter is the kind no one else can see.

And I know what it's like to carry it.

I'm a woman who has walked through a lot of pain and suffering in her life. I say that not because I have it all figured out, but because I want you to know that I understand what it's like to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.

To feel like it's all up to you.

To feel like you have to hold everything together.

To wear a smile and pretend you're okay.

To keep going even when you're exhausted.

I'm still learning what it means to lay those weights down myself.

And I want to share what I'm learning along the way.

I don't want to spend my life busy.

I want what I put my time, energy, and attention into to matter.

I want to focus on keeping the highest-quality things in my life—from the food I eat, to the clothes I wear, to the commitments on my calendar, to the company I keep.

Jesus lived simply.

He moved at a certain pace.

He prioritized people.

I want my home and my way of living to reflect that, too.

That means learning to remove what doesn't serve me.

Letting go of what has become a distraction.

Creating boundaries around what matters.

Making room for what God has actually called me to.

Because I don't want to be busy just for the sake of being busy.

I don't want to fill my life with good things while missing the best things.

I want to live intentionally.

I want to live simply.

I want to live lighter.

And I want to help other women do the same.

“I did not run the race in vain.”

Today, as I was emptying my fears and worries out to God and asking Him for His truth, I came across this verse:

“…holding firmly to the word of life. Then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.”
— Philippians 2:16

Those words stood out to me

I don't want to run my race in vain.

I don't want to spend my life busy just for the sake of busyness.

I don't want to build something simply because I feel like I have to prove that I can.

I don't want fear to dictate my decisions.

I don't want to chase success at the expense of the things God has already entrusted to me.

I want to do the work God has set before me with faithfulness.

I want to spend my time, energy, and resources on the most important things.

I want to hold firmly to the Word of life.

And I want to get out of the way and let Him take the lead in my life.

Maybe that's part of what it means to live lighter.

Not necessarily having fewer responsibilities.

Not having a perfect home.

Not having every area of life figured out.

But learning to recognize what is weighing us down—and being willing to lay it down.

Sometimes that means decluttering a closet.

Sometimes it means clearing your calendar.

Sometimes it means setting a boundary.

Sometimes it means letting go of an expectation.

And sometimes it means opening your hands and saying,

“God, this is too heavy for me. I give it to You.”

So, why am I writing this blog?

I'm writing because I believe there is a connection between the spaces we live in and the lives we live.

I believe that decluttering our physical spaces can create room for something deeper.

I believe simplicity can create space for peace.

I believe letting go can create freedom.

And I believe that sometimes the things we need to let go of aren't things at all.

They're beliefs.

They're fears.

They're expectations.

They're habits.

They're identities we've outgrown.

They're weights we've carried for so long that we've forgotten what it feels like to live without them.

I don't have all the answers.

I'm still walking this out.

I'm still learning how to trust God.

I'm still learning how to surrender.

I'm still learning how to recognize the difference between faithful action and fearful striving.

But maybe that's exactly why I'm supposed to write.

Not because I've arrived.

But because I'm walking the path, too.

And if something God is teaching me can help another woman feel a little less alone, a little less overwhelmed, or a little more willing to lay down what she's been carrying, then it is worth sharing.

Friend, you don't have to carry it all.

If you're feeling heavy, burdened, hurried, overwhelmed, or worried today, I want you to know this:

You don't have to carry it all.

You don't have to figure everything out today.

You don't have to have the whole plan.

You don't have to hold everything together.

Give it to God.

Pour out your heart to Him—the messy parts, the fearful parts, the parts you're embarrassed to admit.

He can handle it.

And as you surrender what you're carrying, ask Him to show you what is yours to do and what you need to lay down.

You may not be able to change everything around you today.

But you can take one small step toward living lighter.

Clear one drawer.

Say no to one unnecessary commitment.

Take one thing off your calendar.

Release one expectation.

Write down one fear and give it to God.

Make space for what matters.

There is a race God has called you to run.

And maybe the invitation today isn't to run faster.

Maybe it's to lay down the weight that is keeping you from running freely.

I'm learning to do that, too.

And I'm so glad you're here.

Less clutter.
Less chaos.
More space for what matters.
More of Him.

Love,

Carrie
